Smoking Bans

No SMokingThere’s been a lot of news and talk about banning smoking even more then we already do. As of now, you can’t smoke indoors in public establishments, some places you can’t smoke in public, and even in Santa Monica, it’s illegal to smoke in your own apartment! But that’s not the worst part of the whole smoking ban, there’s more coming, and it’s coming fast.

*I do not smoke, for the record*

Listening to the radio today, this topic was brought up again like it has repeatedly in the recent past. But rather then banning smoking in locations, or in situations, they are now turning to “the children.” It is being brought to attention that Santa Claus smokes a pipe, just as in the old poem, T’was the Night Before Christmas.

Santa Sleigh

The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth,
And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath.
He had a broad face and a little round belly,
That shook when he laughed, like a bowlful of jelly!”

Take a look at that little excerpt from T’was the Night Before Christmas. See how it references a stump of a pipe, the smoke encircling his head like a wreath? According to parent’s today, that’s too influential and could cause children to contemplate smoking because “Santa does it”. I’m not sure about you, but I myself never even thought, “OMG Santa is smoking,” just as children now won;t either.

Smoking is also supposed to be banned from television and movies, because once again, it’s too influential. I think our society is going to end up killing off our race, not by wars, or bombs, or even each other, but by being babied so much, that we won’t even be able to go outside, for fear the sun being on fire could cause you to think the world should be on fire too. Stop trying to protect the children so much, did you have all this fuss over nothing when you were kids? No. And didn’t you turn out fine?

Teaching of the Day

Master Yourself

Love yourself and be awake–
Today, tomorrow, always.

First establish yourself in the way,
Then teach others,
And so defeat sorrow.

To straighten the crooked
You must first do a harder thing–
Straighten yourself.

You are your only master.
Who else?
Subdue yourself,
And discover your master.
